Why Tajweed Is Worth Learning Properly
The Quran was revealed with precise sounds, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his companions to recite it exactly as he received it. Tajweed, which literally means "to make better," is the science that preserves those sounds. It tells you where in the mouth or throat each letter is produced, which letters are heavy and which are light, how long a madd is stretched, when a noon is hidden and when it is pronounced clearly.
Most Muslims who learned to read the Quran as children were taught to read but not taught the rules. As adults they recite with the habits they picked up, unaware that a heavy letter pronounced lightly or a shortened madd can alter the meaning. Our online tajweed course fixes this in the most effective way possible: a qualified qari listens to you recite, identifies exactly which rules you are missing, and drills them with you until they become automatic.

The syllabus follows the classical order used in tajweed institutes, with every rule immediately applied to Quran recitation.

Makharij al-Huruf (articulation points)
The 17 articulation points of the throat, tongue, lips and nasal cavity. You will learn to produce every letter from its correct place, with special attention to the letters English speakers struggle with: ع, ح, خ, غ, ق, ص, ض, ط and ظ.

Sifaat al-Huruf (characteristics of letters)
Hams and jahr, shiddah and rakhawah, isti'la and istifal, itbaq and infitah, qalqalah, safeer, tafashi and the other qualities that distinguish letters that share an articulation point.

Heavy and light letters (Tafkheem and Tarqeeq)
The seven always-heavy letters, the rules for raa and laam in the name of Allah, and how surrounding vowels change the weight of a letter.

Rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween
Izhar, idgham (with and without ghunnah), iqlab and ikhfa, with dozens of Quranic examples drilled until recognition is instant.

Rules of Meem Sakinah
Ikhfa shafawi, idgham shafawi and izhar shafawi, plus the rules of ghunnah on the mushaddad noon and meem.

Rules of Madd (elongation)
Natural madd, madd muttasil, madd munfasil, madd lazim, madd 'arid lis-sukoon, madd leen and madd badal, with their lengths in counts.

Laam shamsiyyah and qamariyyah, the heavy laam of Allah, and the detailed rules that decide whether raa is heavy or light.

The stop signs in the mushaf, how to stop correctly on different endings, hamzat al-wasl, and choosing good places to pause and resume.

How a Tajweed Class Runs
Listen, Recite, Correct, Repeat
- Minutes 1 to 5: quick revision of the last rule with two or three verses.
- Minutes 5 to 15: the new rule explained on a shared screen with examples from the Quran.
- Minutes 15 to 27: you recite while the teacher listens and corrects every word. This is where the real learning happens.
- Minutes 27 to 30: recap, homework verses to practice and lesson notes sent on WhatsApp or email.

Tajweed Course Questions
What is tajweed and why is it important?
Tajweed is the set of rules that govern how each letter and word of the Quran should be pronounced, including where the sound comes from, how long a vowel is held and when the sound is nasalized. Reciting with tajweed preserves the meaning of the words and is the way the Quran was revealed and passed down. Ignoring tajweed can change the meaning of a verse. Do I need to read Arabic before joining the tajweed course?
Yes. Students should be able to read the Quran, even slowly. If you cannot yet read Arabic, start with our Noorani Qaida course, which introduces the letters, vowels and basic tajweed, and then move into the tajweed course.
How long does the online tajweed course take?
Most students complete the theory and apply it to their recitation in six to nine months with three classes a week. Students who already read fluently and only need to correct specific rules may finish in three to four months.
Is tajweed taught differently to children and adults?
The rules are the same, but the method differs. Children learn each rule through repetition and short examples without heavy terminology, while adults are taught the rule, its name, its reason and its examples so they can self-correct while reciting.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Students who complete the syllabus and pass the final recitation assessment receive a QuranLearnify Tajweed Course certificate. Students who wish to continue can enter the Ijazah program.
